Activities

The Punjabi Cultural Council (PCC) has consistently worked for the promotion of Punjabi language, culture and social welfare through meaningful programmes in Punjab and abroad. Key activities include:

  • Conferred the ‘Punjab Rattan Award’ on Dr Upinderjit Kaur ji, former Education and Languages Minister, at Ludhiana on 18 December 2009 for her valuable contribution to education, Punjabi language promotion and Sikh martial art Gatka.
  • Honoured Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal ji with the ‘Punjab Sewa Award’, S. SP Singh Oberoi with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and S. H.S. Bhullar with the ‘Punjab Gaurav Award’ at Sangrur on 28 July 2012 for their exemplary social service and public contributions.
  • Honoured S. Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, then Mayor of Kent (UK) and President of Gatka Federation UK at Saini Bhawan, Chandigarh on 29 May 2015 for his valuable contribution to promote Sikh martial art Gatka and issues related to Punjab state.
  • Conferred the ‘Punjab Gaurav Award’ on noted Punjabi author, language promoter and academician S. Mota Singh Sarai at Nakodar, Jalandhar on 16 December 2015 for his valuable contribution to Punjabi literature.
  • The first Sikh Member Parliament S. Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, was conferred the ‘Punjab Gaurav Award’ upon him at Chandigarh on 31 July 2017, recognising his historic electoral achievement and global advocacy of Sikh and Punjabi issues in the UK Parliament.
  • Honoured former Senior Deputy Mayor and Councillor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation S. Hardeep Singh Butrela, who is also President of Gatka Association of Chandigarh and Prof Pandit Dhaneshwar Rao with special awards at Saini Bhawan, Chandigarh on 22 January 2018 for promoting Punjabi language awareness in the Union Territory.
  • Organising awareness campaigns and seminars to promote, propagate and popularise Punjabi language and culture, particularly among youth and urban communities.
  • Conducted seminars and workshops on environmental protection, pollution control, clean and green initiatives, women empowerment and human rights.
  • Organised blood donation camps and supported community welfare initiatives as part of its social responsibility.
  • Promoting traditional Punjabi and Sikh martial arts through cultural and sporting activities.
  • Initiated the process of establishing overseas chapters of the Council to strengthen engagement with the global Punjabi diaspora.
